Factors that seem to influence this trend include:
– Higher income and more stability enforce the marriage.
– Personality traits that help one succeed in college also help a person stay in a long-term marriage.
– Educated people understand the benefits of marriageÂ for children and family life.
However many people still see marriage as something negative: something that gets in the way of a career, something limiting.Â “We see it in America as something that tears you down more than building you up. We’ve lost the concept of a helpmate, and we see marriage now more as a burden and a bondage than we do as something that’s helpful and encouraging.”
