Winter White Wedding Cakes

No color says winter like white. These amazing cakes may be pristine and snowy white on the outside, but like a snow-covered scene they can be any color or flavor underneath! The catch is, they’re so gorgeous you may have a hard time cutting into them!

The knot: A family friend baked this three-tiered cake with white icing (doesn’t the texture remind you of snow?!). Black ribbon and pine cones gave the confection an elegant winter theme.

Martha Stewart Weddings: The designs on this dramatic tower mimic the elaborate cake-decorating style of Joseph Lambeth, a master baker in England during the 1920s and ’30s. Fine garlands and latticework are piped onto the fondant in royal icing, as are delicate roses and bunches of grapes. The star and C-scrolls on top are examples of a technique called overpiping, in which a shape is layered over again and again, giving it depth. These heavier effects are piped in decorator’s buttercream (thicker than usual) to maintain their shape.

The Knot: The groom’s mom made a set of three tiny, fondant cakes topped with black feathers and white sugar flowers to match a vintage wedding theme.

Martha Stewart Weddings: To evoke a hip sixties dress crafted of embroidered lace blanketed with floral cotton appliques, cake designer Ron Ben-Israel created silicone molds of appliques inspired by the original fabric, including dahlias, roses, and periwinkles. Sugar paste was pressed into each mold, then applied in layers to the fondant. Amazing!

My Wedding Planning Guide: Marzipan is made from sugar and ground almonds, and has a distinct sweet, smooth flavor. It is often used in wedding cake decor, as it is very malleabe and can be used as icing or formed into delicate shapes such as fruit, flowers, and other designs.

Martha Stewart Weddings: Techniques used by dressmakers to turn fabric into flowers inspired this sophisticated applique cake. A combination of fondant and white chocolate both envelops the cake and decorates it. Prim buttercream dots frame the designs.

The Knot: This three-tiered, ivory buttercream–frosted cake is simple but lacks nothing in the elegance department. Beads of icing and wide ribbon enclircle a cake that hides layers of raspberry buttercream and marzipan.

Martha Stewart Weddings: This cake is as magical as the season’s first flurry. Snowflakes made from royal icing start off small at the top of the cake and grow toward the bottom, giving the impression of a gracefully drifting snowfall. The Knot: A gorgeous, retro four-tiered square cake covered in a white-on-white pattern of dots, with larger dots separating the tiers. A few fresh white japhette orchids topped the confection.

Martha Stewart Weddings: The reticulated pattern of this 18th-century English china is emulated in the multitiered cake by rolled fondant cut with aspic and eyelet-embroidery cutters. Sugar paste was used for the “embroidered” flowers on the top and base.

Planning Ahead: Winter Wedding Details

It’s heating up outside as we get into the full swing of summer, but I’m sure that brides planning a winter wedding are finding it hard to focus on beach themes and warm weather attire. So if you’ve got a special day coming up in about 6 months’ time, here’s a sweet little blog to put you in the wintery mood. It’s called, fittingly, little winter bride.

Winter Weather Wedding Pictures!

Personally, I’m a summer girl. I don’t like the cold, I’m not crazy about rain, and I really don’t like the snow! That said, if you like winter weather there’s something undeniably magical about getting married in the snow! And it does make for some glorious pictures!

Marry Me in Colorado features many couples doing just that. If they’re not saying their vows under a chilly snowfall, at the least they’re brave enough to be taking artistic pictures in the cold, white stuff! And you gotta love the beautiful cover-ups some brides are wearing. Here are some great shots!

‘Tis the Season to be Married

If you are getting married around the holiday season, you may be thinking about incorporating traditional holiday decor into your wedding theme. The colors are easy: Snowy white, deep red, forest green, and tinselly silver. But other elements of the decor can be decided based on asking yourself this question: When you think of Christmas or the holiday season, what is the first thing that comes to mind? BellaOnline suggests using your feelings and memories of this season to plan a warm and inviting wedding.

Decorate using poinsettia, holly, mistletoe, wreathes, garlands, bells, strings of lights, and of course, red and green flowers. A white dress can be made extra festive trimmed in fur, velvet, or silver-colored accents. And the bridal party can be dressed in colors of the season too, such as silver, crimson, or green.

Holiday-themed wedding favors can be really fun and unique. BellaOnline suggests including a holiday ornament, tea lights, CDs of your favorite holiday songs or carols sung by celebrities, small picture frames for thier favorite holiday photos, miniature pumpkin pie, or personalized tins of hot cocoa, coffee, or cookies.

The photos below from Brides.com create maximum impact by keeping the colors clean, simple, and seasonal. Shiny ornaments and other trinkets infuse the decor with additional holiday cheer. Note how the tables are “wrapped” in bright red ribbon to echo all those pretty packages you’d find under your tree!

Winter Brides Wrap it up

Your sleeveless or strapless wedding gown will undoubtedly look lovely on the big day, but how will you brave the winter weather to get to your wedding venue? Are you having an outdoor ceremony at sunset, or a quick photo shoot in the swirling snow? Whatever it is, a little extra protection might be a good idea… But what can you wear that will add, not detract, from the beauty of your bridal wear?

If you just can’t see yourself covering up that gorgeous gown for even a short time, how about adding a bridal shrug (sheer or not) for a bit more coverage? Or, for the ultimate in bridal elegance, what do you say to some gloves (at least your fingers will be warm)?

Dreaming of a Rainy Wedding Day

I know we are just getting into the heat of the summer and most summer brides are envisioning sunny skies for their wedding day. But if you are planning a wedding for the winter months, it can be tricky being prepared for any weather situation. Should the reception be held indoors or outdoors? Will the cloudy skies or rain ruin the photographer’s plans?

I started thinking about that becuase I saw Offbeat Bride’s entry called Rainy wedding = Gorgeous wedding, along with a super cute picture of a sunny bride and her polka dot umbrella. I did some Google searches to find some more photos of rainy wedding days and found some truly gorgeous shots! So don’t let wet weather put a damper on your special day– cloudy skies and rain drops can get you some stunning and very original shots! Besides, many cultures regard rain on your wedding day as good luck! Take a look (you can click on the picture and follow it to its original location)… you might just find yourself wishing for rain on your wedding day too!
