Get the Dress

There was much excited speculation over what The Dress would look like, with many big designers getting in on the fun and creating their perfect princess gown. Ramona Keveza almost got it perfect when she created this romantic A-line gown with a lace illusion neckline and sleeves decorated with delicate Chantilly lace.

Another look-alike is the Andrea gown, by Priscilla of Boston. This silk organza ball gown has embellished lace details on the skirt, much like Kate’s. The fully beaded lace jacket with scalloped edges adds royal charm.

Another Priscilla of Boston gown (this is Style 4615) is equally beautiful, with a twist. This A-line gown with hand-appliqued crystal-encrusted Alencon Lace sleeves also features a a lovely silver sash for added dimension.

Get the Tiara

Of course, a princess has to wear a tiara! If you want a royal headpiece too, but don’t have access to the Queen’s extensive collection of tiaras (Kate chose a  1936 Cartier “halo” tiara), check out these lovely options. Kate’s veil is made of layers of soft, ivory silk tulle with a trim of hand-embroidered flowers, which were embroidered by the Royal School of Needlework, where the lace appliqué for the bodice and skirt were hand-made as well.

Get the Jewels

The lovely drop earrings Kate wore were commissioned by her parents, Carole and Michael Middleton, as a wedding present.  London Jeweler Robinson Pelham created the diamond oak leaf and acorn earrings for the bride – a motif which echoes the coat of arms of the Middleton family.

Brides.com showcases a similar style from their most recent Brides Local Magazines cover shoot. They’re by the L.A.-based designer Simon G., who always finds beautiful, interesting ways to showcase diamonds. Like Kate’s earrings, these delicate danglers would perfectly complement any regal wedding gown.

Roaring 20′s Style: Take a wedding style cue from the dapper fashion of the 1920s. Think dusty nude and lace dresses for your bridesmaids and wing-tip shoes for the guys. Dancing the night away to the cool strains of jazz. And of course the Prohibition era vibe wouldn’t be complete without alcohol, such as “moonshine” and Prohibition “bathtub gin” in your very own speakeasy bar.

Redefined Princess: Put away the ball-gown skirts, because the new princess silhouette will be body-skimming with a bold train. Tiaras are back as the new statement-making headpiece, and so are cathedral-length veils. Sophisticated sequins and beading add royal elegance to everything from the wedding dress, to the floral arrangements, and the wedding cake.

Sultry Ballerina Vibe: Think pale pinks paired with black, feathered headpieces, shredded fabrics, airy plumes, candlelight. This look is all about ambient romance (think Black Swan), where everything happens after 8 p.m.

Preppy Chic: On the other hand, you could go the Ivy League route. From Fair Isle sweaters to Vineyard Vines ties and Tommy Hilfiger blazers, wedding fashions aren’t to be left out! Incorporate Ivy League-chic details like plaids and stripes for the perfect remix of retro, preppy sensibility.

Exotic Indian Inspiration: India is definitely the “it” country for wedding inspiration. It embraces a vibrant color palette like purples, reds and golds, with lavish embellishments such as rich drapery and beading. Exotic, spicy dishes make it an authentic Indian experience.

Man Caves: For the men who can’t leave their PlayStation for even one evening, we have the Man Cave. The man cave has officially moved from the home to the wedding, so create your own enticing retreat complete with Blackjack tables, brandy bars, PlayStations and stogies. Just don’t be surprised if all the male wedding guests disappear into the new “groom’s corner” at the reception.

Food Truck Fun: Embrace your hunger for gourmet food trucks by requesting makeshift sidewalk carts during the cocktail hour or food trucks for the wedding after-party. Waffles, tacos and dumplings — you can have it all!

Video Guest Books: We all love the wedding photo booths, so now we take it up a notch and create a confessional-style video booth for your guests to say a few words in front of the camera. You could even dress up your iPad as a guest book for guests to “write” you well wishes. And of course, for those who feel nothing ever really happened until it’s shared online for all to see, you can easily upload your guest book online via YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, Flickr or Vimeo.

Surprise Honeymoon: Take a cue from Chelsea Clinton’s wedding and leave it up to your groom to plan a surprise honeymoon. You get to have all the fun, but none of the hassle and headache you get planning it!

After you have narrowed your preferences by browsing online or looking in bridal magazines, you can start trying on gowns in a store.  Some wedding dress stores, such as David’s Bridal, can customize dresses in extra-long lengths.

A tall, slender bride can really show off her figure in a sheath gown, which is fitted from top to bottom. Tall, thin brides are usually the ones who can pull off this glamerous look best, in dresses such as these from David’s Bridal (left) and Pascua by La Sposa (right):

If you are a tall woman with an hourglass figure, an A-line gown with a dropped waist works will with your curves. It shows off the figure while accenting the your trim waist. Also, a sweetheart neckline will adds a touch of romance, if it covers enough of the full bustline. If you are statuesque with a pear shaped figure (smaller at the top and fuller at the bottom), a full ball gown is always a great choice. It draws attention to your bodice and waistline while minimizing the hips and rear. The gorgeous dress on the left is Sandie by Jane Wang and the beaded dress on the right is perfect for the Cinderella bride.

If you have broad shoulders, you may want to consider a gown that has straps or a scoop neckline which shortens the width of your shoulders. A dropped waist also elongates the bodice and narrows the shoulders. Less is more when it comes to accents such as off the shoulder sleeves, poofs or ruffles.
