Some people don’t really get the idea of a laid-back wedding, and when instructed to dress casually, still arrive in suits, ties, and formal dresses. Offbeat Bride Mari had a great idea for her wedding which she says, “Fee free to steal.” So we’ll take her literally and repost the adorable little pamphlet that she emailed the guests to help everyone with packing.

Groom Style: Classic & Colorful

So much attention is paid to the bridal gown, that we think it’s time we give some attention to the guy’s attire. That’s what Geoff White states on his Photography blog, and we agree with him! This amazing San Francisco wedding photographer is a big fan of khaki suits for outdoor weddings, and also loves seeing a suit personalized with a cool tie.

These grooms prove that you can be classy yet colorful at the same time. Cool and confident, in a sharp, well-cut suit, bright tie and matching bout… now that’s hot! “I would have never guessed a white suit could look so sharp,” says Geoff, “But it was the ultimate classic look.”

Even when opting for basic black & white, a small touch of color or exotic bud makes a big impact…

The Guy’s Guide to Wedding Guest Attire

Although I do have a few opinions about men’s fashion, I am far from being an expert. So on the topic of what a man should or should not wear to a wedding, I’ll defer to Daniel Billet, your guide to men’s fashion and grooming at About.com. Mr. Billet was accustomed to wearing black suits quite often, and what could be more appropriate for a wedding than a nice black suit? That’s what he was thinking until he got the invitation to his nephew’s daytime wedding in July. What does one wear to a summer wedding before nightfall?? Let’s review the rules of wedding dressing together with Mr. Billet. Ready? Here we go!

Summer Wedding
Certainly avoid black and other dark colors. You will also want to avoid wool and other heavy fabrics typically worn in fall and winter.

Choose a lighter colored suit in cotton, linen or seersucker. Many designers continue to come out with suits in fabrics other than wool. Also, a cotton or linen suit with a bit of stretch added with help retain its shape and give it a slightly more polished look. If it is an evening wedding, black would be acceptable, but go for cotton as I have mentioned.

Winter Wedding
Obviously dark colors are appropriate as well as wool. Suits and blazers with nice trousers, or perhaps a cashmere v-neck sweater with a shirt and tie underneath would all be nice choices. A dress shirt, tie and dress pants are acceptable on their own if that’s all you have, but dress them up with a sweater or blazer if you can.

Evening Wedding
A dark suit is always appropriate and a tuxedo is the only thing to wear if you know it is a formal affair, but remember tuxedos are not to be worn before 5:00pm. If you know it will casual or semi-formal, you can always wear a blazer and slacks with a tie, but try not to look like you’ve just come from the office. Opt for a tie, shirt or both that look more stylish than your usual office attire.

To Be Avoided at All Costs (and I have had the misfortune of witnessing all of the following first hand)

Too casual of a pant such as cargo pants or worse, jeans
Birkenstocks
Out-dressing the wedding party
Un-ironed clothes and unpolished shoes
Wild colors and prints

Disclaimer
The above rules don’t exactly apply if you have been invited to a beach, Vegas, or some other out-of-the-ordinary wedding. In those cases, unless otherwise directed by the wedding party, anything goes. Yikes!
